Before this class, I thought art was simply a drawing, painting, picture, basic brushing, and erasing. I thought this way because ever since grade school I would be told to draw, paint, or sometimes even color and that would be it for my art class for the week. I think because of my childhood memories of art, I did not really want to pursue art. I also did not think much of art and simply thought of it is as something that is not for me. However, as soon as I logged onto zoom for the first day of class for art 110. My thought and perspective or art changed. Definitely what I mentioned is considered art, but it is only the basic of art. I’ve been exposed to so many different types of art, and not only that but so many people have their own description of the thing called art.

To me, art is almost anything. For instance, the laptop I am using to type my essay can be considered art to someone. Who? The person who designed this laptop. I have a Macbook Air from 2019 and I’m sure the person or people who designed this laptop took long hours thinking of how they would want it to be until it met perfection. For me, this laptop may not be art, but there are others who study this item, measure it, take pictures of it, some even create it so it is art. I also learned that art can be simple or it can be very complex… there is no limit to too small or too big for something not to be considered art. Art is different for everyone, just how it means differently to others. One thing that really stood out to me would be from the last artist we looked at where their lifestyle was basically art. They lived in a small studio, they cooked and worked in the same room, yet people came into their gallery to see and observe their projects and even their lifestyle.

My major is Kinesiology and my career goal is to become a public school adaptive/ physical teacher. Through this class, I learned that I can really use art to help my field. One example would be using posters, pictures, or even sculptures for students who have cognitive or any physical disability to see without hearing words. People say that sometimes actions speak louder than words and I think I can use that context with art. A picture can help a student understand and learn more efficiently and effectively rather than me simply trying to explain something to them. Ever since this class, I have definitely found more interest in the topic of art and so I even asked my boyfriend to go to the park with me and paint on a canvas and I found it really relaxing and something I found joy in. I would agree that engaging artworks and art ideas can help people become more complete because art is a way to express oneself that maybe no one can understand or something that people can find a lot of similarities with.

Art definitely matters, without art the world would not be where it is at right now. Art plays a huge role in peoples’ society, environment, mental health, and life. If all the artistic people, artists, vanished this world would be empty as well. We need architectures, designers, fashion designers, artists to bring vibrant colors and buildings for people. We would not be able to have basic buildings furthermore elegant buildings without them. Artists are not simply people who just sit around and draw, but they really help bring a different color in this life. It brings awareness of our necessities. When I just read the slogan “ A great nation deserves great art” from the National Endowment for the Arts, I would agree with this slogan. I agree because I have personally seen the benefits of art and how it has positively benefitted nations.

My final thoughts of Art 110 could be described as “interesting”. I say interesting because I got to learn so many different topics of art that I did not even know was considered art. I learned how limited I was with my knowledge of art and I learned how important it is to keep my eyes open and be willing to hear other people and their experiences with anything. Even now I perceive art so differently and I think that when I go out to the “Real World” I would be able to think back to Art 110 and remember the conversations I had in class.
